She stoops, just a little bit but enough for Matsu to notice, drawing a grimace to their face. The gross smell was worse when she was closer… and she was making fun of them for being short, wasn’t she?
“Like hell I would want you to read my mail – I meant what was yours.”
Their family name, though…? The letter is offered and they take it readily, nearly snatching it. They don’t back off, though. They were standing their ground.
Matsu’s eyes drop to the letter, and their expression immediately changes. It’s surprise again, and they’re clearly taken aback. Their thumb runs across the pen work where Hayate Ito is written. If Fenna is learning anything, Matsu wearing their emotions on their sleeve is definitely at the top of the list. Especially when taken in the stray cat mindset, they’re actually really easy to read.
“… From my dad?” They look back up at her again in confusion, but then return their focus to the letter and start to open the envelope.
How did it get here? That was definitely his handwriting, or else a really good duplicate. Was he missing them? Had someone told him, somehow, where they were?
They unfold the letter and start to read it, right there in front of her. Their brow furrows really quickly, a bit of a wince, and from the subtle droop in their shoulders it doesn’t seem to be happy. Maybe something bittersweet..? Fenna is sure getting to watch a face journey. Abruptly they flinch, about halfway through, and shift to hold the paper in both of their hands. Surprise, pain, a flush of anger rising to their cheeks as they stop reading.
“… What the fuck is this? Some kind of joke?” The effort to keep the wavering out of their voice results in a forced evenness, and even as their grip tightens on the paper they glare up at Fenna. Their throat feels tight.
There’s still half of it left.
